2009 has been a rocky road for the music industry. MP3 theft was at an all time high. 13 year kids everywhere were dipping their hands into the free music jars thanks to sites such as Demonoid, The Pirate Bay and other torrent sites.
But even with the adverse difficulties the music industry is facing, it’s still possible to grab the attention the music industry exec’s and score that ever elusive record deal.
We get emails all the time asking what’s the best way to get a record deal so below is our Top 10 tips on how to accomplish this difficult but possible task!
Who would have thought 10 years ago that ring tones for cell phones would provide the highest grossing sales figures for music singles?
Who would have imagined that an unknown woman with the last name of a unwanted skin infection would pre-sell more albums on Amazon.com than any existing music artist?
That’s the great thing about the music business is anything’s possible. Susan Boyle, DJ Talent and Jedward proved that to be true. The unlikeliest of pop stars emerged as phenomenons to the delight of all the public. Let’s face it, we all love rooting for the underdog.
Here at Yes Mate Recordings, we receive emails all the time asking what’s the best way to get noticed by record executives in order to get a record deal. So with that thought, here are our Top 9 ways:
1. Make sure your music is of listenable quality
With the introduction of technology that is so widely available, anyone with a decent PC or Mac can now write music. With that being said, we are often submitted demo’s that are of such poor production quality, we cannot take them seriously. Brush up on your recording techniques and make sure your songs sparkle before you submit your demo.
2. Use Viral Marketing to create a Buzz
Use YouTube, Myspace and Facebook to promote your songs and create a buzz before you send them off. These viral websites provide an inexpensive way to promote your music. All you need is time to post and off you go. A music exec is mare more likely to give your demo a listen if there is a buzz on the net about your music.
3. Be open to feedback
When you promote your music, be open to receiving feedback from your peers. Your best friend will probably tell you how great your new guitar track is but strangers will be honest. If multiple people are telling you the same things, maybe it’s time to make some changes.
4. Use an A&R service
There are a few reputable services such as Taxi.com which screen music and submit the good songs to established music executives. They also submit music for inclusion in TV shows, movies and video games. Monthly and submission fees but definitely worth checking into as the music screeners are ex A&R’s from major labels.
5. Create great song intros
If the first 30 seconds of your song isn’t good, most people won’t listen any further so make sure your songs are catchy from the beginning.
6. Put your best foot forward
Make sure you put your best work at the beginning of your cd.
7. Make sure your songs are catchy
Don’t you hate it when you buy an album that has 3 great songs, 8 mediocre songs and 3 really bad songs? What does your music have that’s unique? You should be asking yourself this every time you create a new song. Make sure you are creating are something special.
8. Do it because you love it
Don’t make music thinking you are going to strike it rich. Do it because you have a passion for it because only 0.5% of musicians ever make enough money to live on making music full time.
9. Get a nice website
Essential these days. We use our favorite company Orlando Web Design. They work with many music industry professionals and have a great eye for design.
